Follow these steps to have a healthy healing tattoo.
Initial Application:
Your tattoo artist will apply the second skin immediately after completing the tattoo. This transparent, breathable bandage protects your tattoo from bacteria, dirt, and irritation.
First 24-48 Hours:
Leave it on: Keep the second skin on for the first 24–48 hours. You may see some fluid build-up (plasma, ink, and excess moisture) under the bandage; this is normal.
Avoid water exposure: Don’t submerge your tattoo in water or expose it to excessive moisture (showers are fine, but avoid soaking).
Removal:
When to remove: After 24-48 hours, carefully remove the first second skin layer.
How to remove: Wash your hands first, then gently peel back a corner of the bandage. Remove slowly and in the direction of hair growth to avoid irritation.
Clean the tattoo: Once the second skin is off, wash your tattoo with warm water and a mild, unscented soap. Pat dry with a clean, soft paper towel or let it air dry.
Reapply Second Skin (optional):
Some people choose to apply a fresh layer of second skin after cleaning. This can stay on for an additional 3–5 days for added protection. Ensure the skin is completely dry before applying a new piece.
Reapplying: Place the second skin carefully over the tattooed area without stretching it, and press down gently to remove air bubbles.
Final Removal:
After 3–5 days, remove the second skin gently as before. Avoid pulling directly on the skin; go slowly to minimize irritation.
After Removal Care:
Moisturize: Use a gentle, fragrance-free tattoo or unscented lotion twice daily for about 2–4 weeks, or as recommended by your artist.
Avoid sun and water: Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight, and avoid soaking in pools, hot tubs, or baths for at least two weeks.
Healing Period:
The tattoo may go through peeling and itching phases; this is normal. Avoid scratching, picking, or scrubbing the tattoo to ensure proper healing.
